Motivation at work free essay sample

Why do people go to work? In this assay I like to talk about my personal experience of going to work with no motivation for a Job, and actually the idea of knowing that you have to go to work you hate. I have been suffering from extreme apathy, lack of motivation and lost interest at my Job. What ended up happening is that I fund a Job that looked acceptable for short period of time, Just to make some money to pay bills, but I got stuck there working in it for a years. Work takes up large proportion of our lives and gives people identities of who we are in the certain way, if there is no motivation for work and you re always miserable that is becoming part of your identity. There are many theories about motivation at work, the most relative to me is theory of Abraham MasloWs (1943), which suggest that motivation is based on meeting psychological need of a person, sectionl, Book 2 of An introduction to human resource management in business. We will write a custom essay sample on Motivation at work or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page b) People go to work for various reasons for some work could be idea of leisure when you do what you like and actually looking forward to go to work, for others like me work could be a place that motivates only for money, theory of Douglas McGregor (1960). I believe the reason why is happening to some individuals, because every person have a reason to believe that they will be recognised and promoted if they work hard even is not part of any formal contract. Every employee have a psychological contract with their employer, which implicit expectations, obligation and promises that both parties believe have been made with regard to what each expected the Job may lead to dissatisfaction and lack of motivation. Victor Vroom (1964) with his expectancy theory states that is not only a reward that is important in motivation, but the link between efforts and reward, so when you put an effort to your ork and get nothing in return could affect your motivation at your Job. This means that, if an employee feels that they are treated fairly and their expectations are met at work, they are more likely to feel committed to their employer and motivated to work hard for them. Guest (2001) stated that Companies who have a positive psychological contract with their employees is the existence of a large number of fair HRM practices in the business. You can easily tell when people feel unhappy with their Job as level of absents higher than average, which could be very cost effective to the company, example Cooper (2000). There is anode important factor that may affect person motivation at work is a person ability to do their Job, Steer and Rhodes (1978) suggest that those factors can affect people motivation and attendance at work. To overcome motivation issues at work its important to meet psychological needs of a person, because when needs are unmet we experience tension and lack of motivation. Maslow agrees that is important to meet needs of individuals at work to motivate them, needs such as a good working condition, attractive wage, prestige Job title and opportunities encouraging creativity. Job security is one of the factors that motivate people. Maslow also believed that all people are motivated by the same thing, but there are different levels of need. Mostly people spending big part of their live at work, people are motivated by working in the company that make them proud, people want to feel important and recognized. Some of us are motivated by the next promotion to get the title that we deserve and to get recognised for that. A new and exciting opportunities provided by employer that would stimulate people and lets them grow is anode important factor that motivates people at work. Some people feel that they doing same old repetitive work they after day could make them bored and unhappy, but by constructing a work with a lot of different skills and different task would motivate any employee. By involving an employee in company development and providing regular opportunities for them to express their opinion on the regular basis will encourage and motivate them. People may, have different priorities at different times of their lives or their career, but there are have to be fulfilling in order to be motivated at work place. There is no one definition of what motivation is ccording to Arnold (1995,p. 21 1), but its basically involves looking at the factors which cause us to behave in the certain way. (d) Additional information from Forbes. com suggests that the trigger that motivates people to achieve is unique for everyone. For some people is money that motivates them for others that they are driven to make a difference. Regardless of what is motivating an individual it has to be managed and balanced, according to the website. Thats why is very important point was made by the Forbes. com which suggests that manager of the business have to work in employees best interests and elp them to achieve their goals, desires and aspirations. The objective should be to work together. Managers have to encourage their employees to exceed expectations by taking responsible risk. Embrace diverse thinking and measure ability to innovate. It also suggests that managers never have to underestimate an employers ability to perform until you are properly evaluated and tested their abilities and potentials. Anode website I have used to support the important point of motivation at work is Business Insider. This website suggests that by simply recognising your worker is hat motivates them the most. Professor Dan Ariely suggests that both money and happiness within a Job playing a part of what motivates people, but true motivation comes from finding meaning in work and being able to see a progress as extremely important motivator. Both of those websites were entered on 26/11/2013, because I fund them both trusted and their made some interesting points.

How to Easily Mix Your Own Tattoo Ink

How to Easily Mix Your Own Tattoo Ink These are instructions for preparing a tattoo ink. The tutorial should only be used by persons who have received training in aseptic techniques. It takes about 1-1.5 hours. Otherwise, use this information to help ask informed questions of a tattoo professional. Does your tattooist know exactly what is in his or her ink? What You Need to Make Your Own Tattoo Ink Dry PigmentVodkaGlycerine, medical gradePropylene GlycolBlenderSafety EquipmentSterile Ink Bottles Homemade Tattoo Ink Instructions Use clean, sterile materials (see note below), put on a paper mask and gloves.Mix until clear: about 7/8 quart vodka, 1 tablespoon glycerine, and 1 tablespoon propylene glycol. In blender or jar that fits on blender, add an inch or two of powdered pigment and stir in enough liquid from step 2 to create a slurry.Blend on a low speed for about 15 minutes, then on a medium speed for an hour. If you are using a jar on the blender, release pressure buildup every fifteen minutes or so.Use a baster to siphon ink or pour it through a funnel into ink bottles. You may add a sterile marble or glass bead to each bottle to aid in mixing.Store the ink away from sunlight or fluorescent lighting, since ultraviolet radiation will alter some pigments.Keeping track of the amounts of liquid and powdered pigment will help you make consistent batches and improve your technique. You can use smaller amounts of glycerine and propylene glycol, but probably not larger amounts. Too much glycerine will make the in k oily and too much glycol will form a hard shell on top of the ink. If you are not conversant with aseptic techniques, dont make your own ink! Tips for Success Obtain dry pigment from a tattoo supply house. It is much more difficult to order pure pigment directly from a chemical supplier. One natural pigment is carbon black, obtained from completely burning wood. You may substitute Listerine or witch hazel for the vodka. Some people use distilled water. I dont recommend rubbing alcohol or methanol. Water is not antibacterial. While your supplies should be clean and sterile, do not heat-sterilize pigments or their mixtures. The pigment chemistry will change and may become toxic.Although pigments normally are not toxic, you need a mask because breathing pigment particles can cause permanent lung damage. You can use mason jars directly on the blender as long as you unscrew them periodically during mixing to prevent overpressure breakage from heating.

Marketing - Public Relationship Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2250 words

Marketing - Public Relationship - Assignment Example There are just too many and varied implications which need to be taken care of, and which shall be solved in an amicable way if proper addressing of the needs and requirements are ascertained. The times have changed and so have the values which have engulfed the global consumers as these retailers have ruled the roost for way too long now. Now is the time to make a difference – as this change will eventually bring in the much-needed sanity that has been missing in action for a long time. This paper discusses the basis of public relationships that have come up with the passage of time and how these have played their due roles in aligning responsibilities and debates of ethical marketing, and so on. One must understand that the world of today has not been based on a fair trade principle. Even though there is a good amount of talk on this subject, the fact of the matter is that there still are many shortcomings that one can witness within the related ranks. In essence, promulgation of the ethical debate has been marred by profits which are being usurped by the investors, agents of global capitalism regimes, stakeholders and top management concerns of these organizations. In order to produce goods, the role of labour is indeed very essential (Peterson 2007). This is because the labours have a definitive role to play within the work manifestations, no matter which avenue of the trade they are involved within. This has called for a better understanding of the subject of public relations when one discusses the tangent of growth and development within the business of global retailing, which has been widespread for all the right reasons. Much emphasis has been placed on the fact that t hings should be done the right way because employing slave labour does not do justice with the global retailers and their mage is also affected in a very negative way.  Ã‚

Ethical Decision Making Case Study Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2500 words

Ethical Decision Making - Case Study Example Obtaining the sample documents for purposes of checking for quality control may be justified as a means of enhancing performance, but it must be done transparently with full awareness of those affected by the exercise. Poor quality found in this case could not be used for disciplinary purposes because the manner in which it was obtained failed to guarantee the protection of the employees. It is only legally acquired information can be used to initiate disciplinary action (Kaupins & Park 82). Since the information is acquired outside working hours and without the consent of the people rightfully given access ownership of the hard drives, it is may not be considered legal. However, it could and should be used for training purposes to avoid the repetition of poor quality work. Applying PAPA to this situation, the violation of privacy is seen to be evident because the manager did not use his position to ensure there are safeguards in place to protect the employees and the information on their computer accounts. According to the provisions of PAPA, the employees have a right to be protected from information gathering and intrusion by others (Pearlson and Sanders 18). Further, they were not given the opportunity to exercise choice and select the level to which their information could be accessed. If the low quality work was attributed to data accuracy, it is the manager’s responsibility to establish controls that ensure accuracy. If that had been done earlier, the low quality work could not have gone on for months as the case study shows. That means the manager failed to ensure it was kept up-to-date. The information on the employees’ hard drives is the property of the clients and the organization. Therefore, the manager must also follow the pr ocedures in place because as much as he is in charge of office automation, he does not own or have exclusive

Ownership of Mobile Phones by Children Essay

Ownership of Mobile Phones by Children Essay Smart phones are becoming more and more popular nowadays, with its user-friendly design and convenient multi-function. Nearly all people in Hong Kong, including elderly and children, have their own smartphone. Nevertheless, should a smartphone been owned by a young child? Since smartphone brings lots negative effect to children on learning, social and health, the children should not be allowed to own a smartphone. The problem of smartphone brings on children has long been concerned by schools. Lots of secondary and primary schools are not allowed their students to bring phone to school because phones take their attention away from their lessons and destroy discipline. Students who bring their phone to school violate the school regulation and their phones will be confiscated by the teacher. This rule does not only focus on smartphone as it has been set for a long time, and there were not smartphone when the rule set. Smartphone has much more functions and applications which lead to a bigger influence on students concentration on study. Some parents do not agree to this banning as they think that owning a mobile phone keeps children safer as they could know where their children are through calls, texts as well as communicating and Global Position System (GPS) applications and be sure if their children are safe. Also, in an emergency, children can call for a help quickly and easily. Indeed, owning a smartphone does not keep children safe but put them into an unsafe situation as they are carrying an expensive fashionable deice which makes them a target for criminals. Millions of people are robbed of cell phone every year while some of the cases are involved with violence. Furthermore, many children spend so much time talking on the phone, texting with friends or playing games, and thus do not aware what is going on around them. Every year children cause car accidents because their attention was on their phone activities but not the traffic while crossing the street. Parents may argue that the smartphone is helpful on learning. Schools nowadays are encouraging liberal learning which requires students to search lots of information themselves. Smartphone is a suitable and useful tool to assist students to achieve the liberal learning and broaden their horizon. It is much more convenient or the student to search for information which is related to their study and helpful for them to take photos and videos to records any new discovery at any time and in any new place. Take for an example, according to a teacher from a primary in United States We have seen an increase in time on task in our fifth-grade students. Students who would normally write a few words or a sentence on paper are now writing paragraphs and beyond on their smartphones. (Dickerson Schad, 2012) Smartphone does give a great help to students on this case, nevertheless such benefit can also be achieved by an e-book and a digital camera. Smartphone is useful but not the only tool on ass isting student learning. Moreover, student will be addicted to smartphones not for learning purpose but for playing games, chatting as well as checking the new status of their friends on facebook. From the survey conducted by Time magazine 84 percent of respondents said that they could not go a single day without their cellphones, and 20 percent of respondents check their phone every 10 minutes as well as 24 percent said they had used text messages to set up a rendezvous with someone they were having an affair with, a number that includes 56 percent of Chinese respondents. (Gilbert, 2012) From the statistic the result that students negligence on their study is foreseeable as their concentration will be putted on the smartphone activities if they are allowed to have their own smartphone. Smartphone just as alcohol and drugs which is addictive and brings harms to human body. Nevertheless, we always only enjoying the convenient bring to us but have ignored the negative aspect of smartphone. Smartphone dose brings lots of negative influence to children. School already set rule to avoid children to be addicted to smartphone, however only by the effort from school is not enough. To protect children and to let them have a better development, government should legislate to ban the children below 16 owning smartphone, and companies should not sell smartphone to children below 16. A government authority has to be established to implement the ordinance as well, otherwise the legislation is meaningless. Government should also do advertisement to educate the public the proper use of smartphone and the consequence of addicted on smartphone. Parents also have their responsibility to protect the children by not giving their smartphone to their children to play. The corporation from government and parents is important on saving children from the harm of smartphone. Some people may oppose to this legislation as they think that smartphone dose let learning easier and interesting which are good to children development. The learning games, dictionary, language learning application and scientific calculator are helpful tools to assist children on learning. Children could find that learning is not such difficult with the assist of these user friendly learning applications. The MLDs  [1]  , an American company providing network service on personal and commercial use, is a good example on that. The MLDs is useful to link the home with the school in ways not possible before (Tomko, 2010). The ability to access information from the palms of their hands, student-to-student conversation has increased. When problems arise, the students ask each other, not the teacher. And students are becoming more self-directed learners, since their lessons are all on their MLDs. They know what their learning tasks are. Nevertheless, the MLDs network and other learning applications can also be accessed through I-pad or e-book, but not only smartphone. Thus, this cannot be a reason on rejecting the banning. Apart from the influence on learning, smartphone also be an obstacle on development childrens social skill. The social area of the children is bounded in the internet social website or social applications as a result of addicting to the use of smartphone. They only communicate with friends through the smartphone but rarely have a face to face communication with the people surrounding. Many people must been in the odd atmosphere in which all the friends around are focusing on their smartphone playing games or whatsapping with their friend during a meal in the restaurant. People around the table are friends and having meal together, however no conversation between them. Growing up in such a non-face-to-face-communicating environment does hinder childrens social ability. Furthermore, using smartphone brings possible long-term health risks, such as behavioral problems on children, increased cancer risk as well as decreased male fertility, especially in children usage. The research led by Dr Siegal Sadetzki, an epidemiologist at Gertner Institute, Chaim Sheba Medical Center, Israel, found that heavy cell phone users had a 50% higher risk of developing a parotid tumor which arise in the salivary gland near the ears and the jaw, a position where cellphones are typically held, and they can be malignant or benign. Because childrens brains and nervous systems are still developing, any possible damage to them is even more serious than for adults. The radio frequency emissions from the phones could cause other health issues in other parts of the body, such as the damage to the central nervous system, and thereby having a negative impact on learning or behavior, or cancers could result in organs other than the brain.  [2]  There are also studies which reve al the negative impact of cell phones on the health of the young ones. For example, quite recently, Dr Kheifets and researchers in Denmark discovered that children who used cell phones and whose mothers had used cellphones during their pregnancy had 80% higher incidence of behavioral issues. These include emotional issues, hyperactivity, inattention and having problems with their peers. Even those children who themselves did not have cellphone exposure except during their mothers pregnancies had 54% higher incidence of such problems. All in all, the harm brings from smartphone has long been a problem which be neglected. Government should legislate to ban the children below 16 owning smartphone as soon as possible in order to avoid children being affected or harmed by smartphone. Only avoiding children to be affected in school is not enough, government and parents have their responsibility on saving children from the harm of smartphone. Only by the corporation of school, government as well as parents can the problem be solved, and can the children have a better development.

Michael Fays Conviction in Singapore :: essays research papers

In this article, a young American boy, Michael Fay, who lived in Singapore, was convicted of vandalism and was sentenced to a flogging. The author of this article, Mike Royko, was American, and was on Fay’s side, he thinks that a flogging is wrong. Royko defines what Fay did as â€Å"mischief†. Giving someone a rubber pencil when they ask to borrow a real pencil is mischief, spray painting, egging, switching license plates and tearing down street signs is vandalism, which is more serious than mischief. I think that Royko was trying to downplay what Fay did, to prove his point that flogging is much too harsh for vandals. President Clinton became involved in the case because as the President of the United States he has to protect his citizens, whether they are one mile away from him in the United States, or if they are on the other side of the world. He might not have wanted to intervene, he might not have cared at all about Michael Fay, but the public did, and it would not look good if he said he did not care. When President Clinton asked the governor of Singapore to ease up on the punishment, he told Clinton to mind his own business. The government does have the right to punish its citizens in the way they see fit. In a city as densely populated as Singapore, they cannot have people running around doing whatever they feel like, and then getting off with a small fine and some community service. Clinton could ask them, but they do not have to comply. Clinton was also on precarious territory, because there is a big trade industry between Singapore and the U.S., and losing that, would mean losing billions of dollars. Like most Americans, the author of this article strongly opposed the flogging, which is not surprising. It is not surprising because since he is an American, and because he is, he is used to the customs here, but also because Fay was an American just like Royko. They had something in common, and people like people who are like them. Even though that was practically the only thing he knew about Fay, it was something they shared. They had shared the rights and freedoms of being an American, while living there. If it had been someone from any other country, Mike Royko, would not have cared nearly as much.

Communication Strategies Essay

Technology is something we all use every day. It could be your cell phone, laptop, tablet, or anything else you prefer. Sadly to say, we also become dependent on these different types of technology. If you have dealt with technology enough in your lifetime, you know that it will fail you at some point in time. It is always at the most inconvenient times as well. Having an effective communication strategy to use while your technology or network isn’t available is very important. Should something happen to your network, you should have troubleshooting steps or a communication strategy readily available. It is the responsibility of the organization or business to make sure there is a communication strategy available. According to our text, an organization is a stable, formal social structure that takes resources them to produce outputs (Laudon & Laudon, 2012). The technical definition focuses on three elements of an organization. Capitol and labor are primary production factors provided by the environment (Laudon & Laudon, 2012). I’m not familiar with many organizations, so the organization that I am most familiar with is the military, the Air Force to be exact. Working in an office setting and also being a technical administrator, I constantly dealt with communication issues. When I think of a digital firm, I think of a firm in which nearly all of the organization’s significant business relationships with customers, suppliers, and employees are digitally enabled and mediated just like the text states (Laudon & Laudon, 2012). The internet is also the first thing that comes to my mind and I will be the first to admit that I use it for everything. I have become very dependent upon Google. I can think of millions of digital firms. Digital firms sense and respond to their environments far more rapidly than traditional firms; giving them more flexibility to survive in turbulent times (Laudon & Laudon, 2012). Digital firms place an emphasis on the digitization of business processes and services through sophisticated technology and information systems. Technology adoption has been increasing as digital firms continually look to achieve greater levels cost savings, competitive advantage, and operational performance optimization. The organization I choose to discuss is the United Services Automobile Association (USAA). It is a Fortune 500 financial services company offering banking, investing, and insurance to people and families that serve, or served, in the United States military. I became a member of this organization early 2009 and I do not ever see myself leaving this organization. I rate them five stars on their technology resources and systems. USAA uses technology in various areas within the organization to provide such a good â€Å"Customer Relationship Management† system. They provide to their customers online banking, mobile banking, the option to deposit checks from home, pay home or car insurance online, pay bills, submit insurance claims, and these are to just name a few. Whenever I call their 1-800 number, I rarely have to speak to a human unless I absolutely need to because almost everything is automated with them. Information systems or technology is very important in organizations today because more than 23 million managers and 113 million workers in the labor force rely on information systems to conduct business (Laudon & Laudon, 2012). That is a good deal of people. It is no wonder that Information Technology is such a growing career field with excellent salaries. Also, because of information systems, more people have the option to work from home. Information systems are essential for conducting day-to-day business in the United States and most other advanced countries, as well as achieving strategic business objectives (Laudon & Laudon, 2012). Doctor offices, retail stores, travel agencies, and many personal services use technology every day. Many business firms invest heavily in information systems to achieve six-strategic business objectives: products, services, and business models; customer and supplier intimacy; improved decision making; competitive advantage; and survival (Laudon & Laudon, 2012). Information systems are also the number one reason global marketing is so successful today. For example, many people choose to do online shopping during the holiday’s because it is less of a hassle, less stressful, and you can choose your own shopping hours. I have become a fan of online shopping as well because the sales are just as good as in-store sales. Internet service firms, such as Google, eBay, and Amazon, are able to replicate their business models and services in multiple countries without having to redesign their expensive fixed-cost information systems infrastructure (Laudon & Laudon, 2012). My personal favorite with USAA is their mobile banking. It is great having your banking information at the tip of your fingers. With so much identify theft and fraud in the world today, it is great to be able to see your account information in detail. If you look around, almost everyone owns a cell phone and most of them are smart phones. It is best to use these gadgets to their full capacity. I don’t always have time to stop by the bank or call to speak to a representative to have them make a transaction for me. I even have the option to schedule transactions’ so I will not have to remember to do it each day or month. It is more convenient to do it myself from my phone or computer versus doing it in person. I cannot recall the last time I actually paid any bills in person or mailed a payment in. I don’t think I will ever go back to that method if I can help it because I am all about saving time and making things simpler. As with everything, there are advantages and disadvantages and technology is no different. Although I feel that technology has made the population a bit lazier, we all have to admit it did make things in life a lot easier. I can recall being a technical administrator in the United States Air Force. Sadly to say, whenever we had power outages almost everything shut down. My fellow employees always thought that this meant go home for the rest of the day. Many times it did mean that. I tried not to fall victim to this because I am one of those people who feel like there is always work to be done. It was those times when I realized how heavily we depended on technology. I often wonder how advance technology will be 10 or 15 years from now and will everyone be able to keep up. I also worry about our senior citizens and I sympathize with them a great deal. My young nieces already know how to work computers, smart phones, you name it. Sometimes they teach me things about technology. While it made things simpler for the younger generation, it made things a lot more complex for our senior citizens. I often see my grandmother struggling to keep up with any assistance she may get because to renew or apply for it, she has to do it on the internet. Without any of my family’s assistance, she would never be able to do this. Most of our senior citizens are used to buying stamps and sending their mail off to the post office. Hopefully things don’t get too advanced for them. We must not leave them struggling to keep up. No matter what you’re viewpoint is on technology, we have to face the fact that it’s not going anywhere. References Haltiwanger, J., Lynch, L., & Mackie, C. (2007). General Jimmy Doolittle - World War II

General Jimmy Doolittle - World War II Jimmy Doolittle - Early Life: Born on December 14, 1896, James Harold Doolittle was the son of Frank and Rose Doolittle of Alameda, CA. Spending part of his youth in Nome, AK, Doolittle quickly developed a reputation as boxer and became the amateur flyweight champion of the West Coast. Attending Los Angeles City College, he transferred to the University of California-Berkeley in 1916. With the US entry into World War I, Doolittle left school and enlisted in the Signal Corps reserve as a flying cadet in October 1917. While training at the School of Military Aeronautics and Rockwell Field, Doolittle married Josephine Daniels on December 24. Jimmy Doolittle - World War I: Commissioned a second lieutenant on March 11, 1918, Doolittle was assigned to Camp John Dick Aviation Concentration Camp, TX as a flying instructor. He served in this role at various airfields for the duration of the conflict. While posted to Kelly Field and Eagle Pass, TX, Doolittle flew patrols along the Mexican border in support of Border Patrol operations. With the wars conclusion later that year, Doolittle was selected for retention and given a Regular Army commission. After being promoted to first lieutenant in July 1920, he attended the Air Service Mechanical School and Aeronautical Engineering Course. Jimmy Doolittle - Interwar Years: After completing these courses, Doolittle was permitted to return to Berkeley to complete his undergraduate degree. He achieved national fame in September 1922, when he flew a de Havilland DH-4, equipped with early navigational instruments, across the United States from Florida to California. For this feat, he was given the Distinguished Flying Cross. Assigned to McCook Field, OH as a test pilot and aeronautical engineer, Doolittle entered the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1923, to begin work on his masters degree. Given two years by the US Army to complete his degree, Doolittle began conducting aircraft acceleration tests at McCook. These provided the basis for his masters thesis and earned him a second Distinguished Flying Cross. Finishing his degree a year early, he commenced work towards his doctorate which he received in 1925. That same year he won the Schneider Cup race, for which he received the 1926 Mackay Trophy. Though injured during a demonstration tour in 1926, Doolittle remained on the leading edge of aviation innovation. Working from McCook and Mitchell Fields, he pioneered instrument flying and assisted in developing the artificial horizon and directional gyroscope that are standard in modern aircraft. Utilizing these tools, he became the first pilot to take off, fly, and land using only instruments in 1929. For this feat of blind flying, he later won the Harmon Trophy. Moving to the private sector in 1930, Doolittle resigned his regular commission and accepted one as a major in the reserves upon becoming the head of Shell Oils Aviation Department. While working at Shell, Doolittle aided in developing new higher-octane aircraft fuels and continued his racing career. After winning the Bendix Trophy Race in 1931, and the Thompson Trophy Race in 1932, Doolittle announced his retirement from racing, stating, I have yet to hear anyone engaged in this work dying of old age. Tapped to serve on the Baker Board to analyze the reorganization of the air corps, Doolittle returned to active service on July 1, 1940, and was assigned to the Central Air Corps Procurement District where he consulted with auto makers about transitioning their plants to build aircraft. Jimmy Doolittle - World War II: Following the Japanese bombing of Pearl Harbor and the US entry into World War II, Doolittle was promoted to lieutenant colonel and transferred to Headquarters Army Air Force to aid in planning an attack against the Japanese home islands. Volunteering to lead the raid, Doolittle planned to fly sixteen B-25 Mitchell medium bombers off the deck the aircraft carrier USS Hornet, bomb targets in Japan, then fly through to bases in China. Approved by General Henry Arnold, Doolittle relentlessly trained his volunteer crews in Florida before embarking aboard Hornet. Sailing under a veil of secrecy, Hornets task force was spotted by Japanese picket on April 18, 1942. Though 170 miles short of their intended launch point, Doolittle decided to immediately commence the operation. Taking off, the raiders successfully hit their targets and proceeded on to China where most were forced to bail out short of their intended landing sites. Though the raid inflicted little material damage, it provided a massive boost to Allied morale and forced the Japanese to redeploy their forces to protect the home islands. For leading the strike, Doolittle received the Congressional Medal of Honor. Directly promoted to brigadier general the day after the raid, Doolittle was briefly assigned to the Eighth Air Force in Europe that July, before being posted to the Twelfth Air Force in North Africa. Promoted again in November (to major general), Doolittle was given command of the Northwest African Strategic Air Forces in March 1943, which consisted of both American and British units. A rising star in the US Army Air Forces high command, Doolittle briefly led the Fifteenth Air Force, before taking over the Eighth Air Force in England. Assuming command of the Eighth, with the rank of lieutenant general, in January 1944, Doolittle oversaw its operations against the Luftwaffe in northern Europe. Among the notable changes he made was allowing escorting fighters to leave their bomber formations to attack German airfields. This aided in preventing German fighters from launching as well as assisted in allowing the Allies to gain air superiority. Doolittle led the Eighth until September 1945, and was in the process of planning for its redeployment to the Pacific Theater of Operations when the war ended. Jimmy Doolittle - Postwar: With the postwar reduction of forces, Doolittle reverted to reserve status on May 10, 1946. Returning to Shell Oil, he accepted a position as a vice president and director. In his reserve role, he served as a special assistant to the Air Force chief of staff and advised on technical issues which ultimately led to the US space program and the Air Forces ballistic missile program. Retiring completely from the military in 1959, he later served as chairman of the board of Space Technology Laboratories. A final honor was bestowed upon Doolittle on April 4, 1985, when he was promoted to general on the retired list by President Ronald Reagan. Doolittle died September 27, 1993, and was buried at Arlington National Cemetery. Selected Sources Doolittle Raiders: First Joint ActionCalifornia State Military Museum: General Jimmy Doolittle

Islam is Not the Enemy of America Research Paper

Islam is Not the Enemy of America - Research Paper Example America became the envy of other nations as the country was populated by people who knew how to get along with one another, regardless of race, nationality, religion, gender, or beliefs in life. However, all of that changed with the attacks on the Word Trade Center Twin Towers and the Pentagon on September 11, 2001. The perpetrators of the crime were proven to be Muslim men who were in the United States on student visas. It was this terrorist attack from within our shores that totally reshaped the way that America came to view immigrants to the country. It most specially changed the image of the Muslims in America. The once tolerant nation now became a nation that despised all things Muslim, for it was the Muslims who shed the blood of Americans and attacked the peaceful nation on its very own soil using their own airplanes against them. It was this mindset that led to the new American belief that Islam, which is the religion practiced by Muslims should be tagged as the enemy of Amer ica. That belief has shaped the beliefs of a new generation of Americans and it has caused divisiveness within the American society at large. It is my belief however, that Islam is not the enemy of America. Rather, the Muslims and the followers of Islam have been lumped together with those of radical Islamic beliefs that have nothing to do with the true meaning of Islam and the Muslim way of life. By writing this paper, I hope to present the reasons as to why Muslims and Islam are not enemies of America. I will be presenting factual evidence based upon authoritative journals, newspaper reports, and quotes from interviews with people who are quite familiar with the aforementioned topic. In the end, I hope to have presented a solid explanation regarding why Americans have a misconception about Muslims and Islam in general. In order to understand more about what Islam truly is about, we first need to know who the Muslims are. Muslims are the people who follow the Islamic faith. Theirs is a religion that spans the globe from the Southern Philippines, the Middle East, Indonesia, and Africa. While a small fraction of the religious practitioners also reside in the Soviet Union, China, North and South America, and finally, Europe. (â€Å"Understanding Islam and the Muslims†). Muslims, just like all other religions believe that there is one unique God under whose authority Man exists. They are the people who believe that Mohammed is the sole prophet of God and that no other God other than the Muslim God exists. By definition, Islam, the religion has been defined by experts as simply meaning â€Å"submission†. Therefore, in religious terms, â€Å"Islam† is said to mean â€Å"... complete submission to the will of God†. The very definition of Islam has nothing to do with violence or terrorism. However, there are some factions

Asthma Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2500 words

Asthma - Research Paper Example Proper management of the disease will enable patients live a better quality of life with fewer hospitalisations. Asthma is an episodic and chronic inflammatory disease of the small airways of the lungs, characterised by intermittent airway narrowing and airflow obstruction that leads to symptoms of recurrent episodes of wheezing and shortness of breath, chest tightness and coughing particularly at night and early in the morning. (Goyal & Agrawal, 2013) It causes a heavy economic burden on patients, their families and the healthcare system. It is a burden to low-income earners due to medical and drug costs. Asthma patients experience missed school or work days, medical expenses and even premature death therefore influencing their quality of life. Knowledge about the disease and its predisposing causes for development would help researchers to better target future therapies. (Bollmeier, 2013) Asthma is a complex syndrome characterised by airway hyper-responsiveness and is caused by a multicellular inflammatory reaction that leads to airway obstruction. Inflammatory and cellular infiltration of the airways is by recruitment and activation of mast cells, macrophages, antigen presenting dendritic cells, neutrophils, eosinophils and T lymphocytes. The major role in the activation of the immune system that leads to the release of many mediators such as interleukins and granulocyte macrophage colony stimulating factor is by type 2 T helper cells. Cells and tissues in asthmatics are prone to inflammatory reactions against normally harmless substances. This inflammation can cause swelling, mucous production leading to airway narrowing. Air narrowing leads to asthma triggering symptoms. Exposure to substances that trigger reactions on the airways lead to production of IgE antibodies that help release of inflammatory mediators such as histamine and leukotrienes. These mediators cause the airway of the smooth muscles
